Change from Below
In the weeks leading up to the inauguration, we'll be posting people's thoughts, ideas, responses to critiques of the call for a Celebrate People's History and Popular Power Bloc, and anything else that we think is relevant right here. In the meantime, we welcome blog submissions and additional endorsements to the call from collectives, groups, or individuals at hopefrompeople [at] gmail [dot] com.

We’re used to folks coming into town for political events like protests and conferences. I’d say most of us who live in the District are happy for the opportunity to join with others in manifesting resistance to state violence, share and network with activists from around the country without having to leave town. One frustrating dynamic though, which I’ve seen repeated a lot, is the national mobilization that doesn’t connect at all with locals doing work on intersecting issues. And the coalition that doesn’t actively encourage its members to learn about the local organizing landscape, and the issues that matter the most to DC natives, who are almost never in positions of leadership in these mobilizations.
Towards that end, of being more informed visitors to the District, whether you’re coming for five hours or five days, here are a few resources.
* Here’s the text to an “anti-oppression guide to DC” that some local activists put together for the inauguration four years ago
* DC grassroots organizing victories in 2008
* And victories in 2007

Join a panel of local and regional community organizers to discuss how the recent election of Barack Obama will impact political and grassroots organizing.
* Will having Obama in office mean the world now will be easier to change?
* How much does it matter who is in office when you’re trying to make a difference?
* Can we build on the grassroots momentum that mobilized around the election to make positive and effective change in the lives of the people in our community?
* How do we talk about the need to keep our politicians in check without alienating folks who worked so hard to put those politicians into office?
